Manners in my country

8.6

1 Aleksander:    In my country, people usually shake hands when they greet each other - not only the first time they meet, or if they haven't seen each other for a long time, but every day. When you enter a room, it's normal to shake hands with everyone in the room.

2 Mei:                When you first start going out with someone, I think you should always act fairly cool. I mean, you shouldn't answer their texts immediately and things like that; it's uncool. On the other hand, if people wait too long, that's a sign they're not interested. I mean, if a guy doesn't answer your texts after two days, then you should forget about him and move on.

3 Lee Kuan:       When you go out here, people expect you to dress smartly. The way you dress is important. Your clothes can't be dirty or crumpled or old. And it's important to be fashionable, especially for women, with nice make-up and jewelry. It's what people expect.

4 Simone:          If you've only just started seeing someone, don't request to be their friend on Facebook! I mean, if you've only been on a few dates, you don't necessarily want to get involved with all their friends, do you? You should definitely wait and decide if you want to be in a relationship with each other before you accept each other as friends.

5 Rosa:              In Peru, if you go visit your friends you should never arrive on time. No one arrives on time. It's perfectly OK to arrive an hour late. Nobody cares. It's expected! If you really want people to be punctual, you have to say hora inglesa, which means 'English time'.

6 Ramon:           People tend to go out late in Spain, really late - not just young people but everyone. I mean, I often don't meet my friends until 11 o'clock. If you want to eat in a restaurant, it's perfectly normal to eat at that time, and if you want to go dancing or go to bars, in Madrid, you can stay up until five, six, seven in the morning. There are still lots of people out at that time.

7 Khalid:           Generally speaking, people my age eat with their family in the evening. My mother and my sisters cook it and we all eat together. It's not acceptable to go on dates in the evening with a girlfriend, unless you're engaged first. After dinner, I normally go for a drive with my friends. Or we go to the shopping mall and hang out with our friends.
